From a small, independent business designed as a way to give to those in need to a place of honour at the Toronto Raptors’ 20th anniversary celebrations, Made2Measure Clothing has come a long way.
The custom clothier was the brainchild of brothers Hugo and Netanel Lichtenstein, who started it when they were still students at Yeshivat Or Chaim high school.
“We were volunteering for a bunch of organizations but there were two in particular that helped children that we wanted to do more for,” Hugo said. “They were new organizations that needed money and while we didn’t have a lot of money, we had nothing but time because we were both 17.”
They began sourcing and selling goods to raise funds, and once they’d gained both practical experience and enough of an educational footing to run a proper business, they started up their own bespoke clothing line with an eye to helping others.
These days, the company has taken on a variety of other causes, with 20 to 25 per cent of the money brought in going to various charitable causes.
“Our parents raised us with the motto of ‘if you’re not receiving, you’ve got to be giving,” Hugo said.
Their suits, shirts, pants, jackets and overcoats are customized to meet their clients’ exact specifications, not just in terms of fit and colour but also in terms of fabric – they have some 1,500 different cloth types available – and style.
“We have styles from Italian to British dating back to the 18th century but with modern designs and fashion statements,” Hugo said. “An individual can customize the process from start to finish. We’re literally creating a new pattern for every customer.”
Most importantly, the brothers manage to provide the clothing at a fraction of the cost of other custom clothiers.
The company designed custom varsity jackets for several of the Toronto Raptors’ alumni, including Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, Charles Oakley and Muggsy Bogues.
“It was great to be part of the Raptors’ 20th anniversary season in what’s probably their most memorable season ever,” Hugo said.
While the brothers live in the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area, Made2Measure will pay visits to clients to provide custom fittings.
